OUR CHARITY FOR 2023 - The Royal Free Charity Miranda Filmer Fund

The Miranda Filmer Fund: Neuroendocrine Research Project was set up by Antonia and Charles Filmer with the Royal Free Charity (charity number 1165672) and Professor Martyn Caplin after the death of Miranda Filmer on 10th June 2022, aged 30.

Currently, high grade neuroendocrine neoplasms have survival outcomes of only about 7 months, lower grade neuroendocrine tumours have a median overall survival of between 8-16 years, Miranda had both. Current treatment options for high grade NENs are limited and confer small survival benefit to patients.  Early diagnosis and early treatment can significantly improve outcomes from this debilitating and rare form of cancer.

Little is known regarding the underlying genetic makeup of these rare tumours, and there is a lack of understanding of the genetic differences between them and how these differences may be utilised to better understand how these tumours develop and direct therapies to improve treatment options for patients.

The research is to be carried out in the UCL laboratories at the Royal Free Hospital and the clinical oncology department at The Royal Free Hospital. A clinical fellow will be responsible for performing the above analysis in the laboratory, supervised by two clinical supervisors and a laboratory supervisor, working closely with NET pathologist on sample acquisition and analyses. The aim is to recruit a second clinical fellow as the research progresses.

Functional PET imaging will be performed at Royal Free Hospital Nuclear Medicine Department.

The team hope to publish preliminary data at an international conference at least in abstract form by March 2024.

To date thanks to the generosity of friends and family and our supporters we have raised just over £375,000, the long-term goal is to raise £1million and establish a dedicated laboratory at the RFH for research into neuroendocrine cancer.
